Confirmed bachelor Jud Parker, a contented talent agent, travels to New Haven, Connecticut on business and meets Anastacia "Stacie" Macaboy, the owner of a dance school. Their paths cross again in New York, where Jud treats Stacie to a baseball game, dinner, and dancing, leading her to fall for him. Trouble arises when a New Haven newspaper mistakenly claims they are engaged, causing Jud to become upset. Meanwhile, Stacie's reputation suffers when Mrs. Levoy and her daughter, who operate a rival dance school, spread rumors, resulting in students dropping out of Stacie's school. Jud and Stacie struggle with how to address their relationship until Stacie makes a bold bet on the outcome of the next New York Giants game.
