Richard Trevelyan (Richard Todd), once a rancher, sits on death row in a Texas prison. He unexpectedly wins a new trial and is acquitted when a single juror holds out for his innocence. Meanwhile, actress Shelley Carnes (Ruth Roman) heads to a Texas dude ranch for some rest. Along her journey, she meets ranchers J.D. (Frank Conroy) and Myra Nolan (Kathryn Givney) and borrows their car. Caught in a storm, Shelley encounters Trevelyan by chance, who happens to know the Nolans. When Shelley finally arrives, the dude ranch is closed. Liza McStringer (Mercedes McCambridge), who runs the ranch with her younger brother String (Darryl Hickman), reveals she was the juror responsible for Trevelyan's acquittal. Shunned by her neighbors for her decision, Liza finds a friend in Shelley, who is invited to stay and bonds with String. Shelley soon learns that Loraine, Trevelyan's late wife and the murder victim, was a despised and troublesome woman who had even had an affair with J.D. While returning the car, Shelley stays with the Nolans and meets their neighbor Harvey Turner (Zachary Scott), who is quickly drawn to her and recounts his own negative experiences with Loraine. Shelley and Trevelyan cross paths again and are instantly attracted to each other. However, the jealous and vindictive Liza reveals herself as Loraine's murderer and nearly turns on Shelley as well, but is stopped just in time. Liza and String attempt to flee, but are caught soon afterward.
