Rip MacCool, guided by the motto that "money talks," arrives in San Francisco ready to make his fortune—no matter the cost. Through a blend of shrewd business moves and risky stock market dealings, Rip amasses a financial empire, even if his methods often leave others, like Ada Stritch, out in the cold. Rip's personal life is no less tumultuous. He marries Lily Douvane, who later leaves him, taking a substantial part of his wealth. He then weds Zoe Carnot, his son's nurse, but endures further loss when Zoe dies in childbirth. As Rip continues to accumulate wealth, a crisis emerges: a run on the bank now operated by Ada Stritch threatens to devastate San Francisco. In a climactic gamble, Rip wagers his entire fortune against the bank's fate, letting a single hand of cards decide the city's future.
