Carol Corliss, a glamorous Hollywood star, becomes the patient of noted psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Sylvester after developing a crippling phobia of large crowds. To elude her adoring fans, she disguises herself as an unattractive brunette or wears a veil to conceal her true identity. Dr. Sylvester prescribes a vacation at a mountain lake cabin and enlists the help of young outdoorsman Emory Muir to act as her therapist. Unimpressed by celebrity or by Carol's charms, Emory focuses instead on fishing and photography. Even after Carol sheds her homely disguise and reveals her true self, Emory remains indifferent. The situation becomes more complicated when Carol's frequent movie co-star, the dramatic Jay Holmes, arrives to proclaim his love for her.
