After returning from fighting in World War I, James Allen is unwilling to settle into a mundane life and sets out to find his fortune. Traveling across America, he works as a skilled tradesman in the construction industry. When hard times strike, Allen ends up at a shelter, where an acquaintance convinces him to go out—only to reveal his true intention of robbing a diner. Allen is wrongfully implicated and sentenced to a brutal chain gang. Despite his grim circumstances, Allen manages to escape and makes his way to Chicago. Over the years, he slowly climbs the ranks to become a highly respected construction engineer. However, his troubled past catches up with him, and despite support from civic leaders and friends, he is forced back onto the chain gang. After another daring escape, Allen realizes that to survive, he must embrace a life outside the law.
