Jeff Warren, a Korean War veteran returning to his job as a railroad engineer, stays with his co-worker Alec Simmons and becomes charmed by Alec's daughter. His attention is quickly drawn to Vicki Buckley, the alluring wife of Carl Buckley, a brutal railroad supervisor known for his violent temper and alcoholism. Jeff is unwillingly pulled into an affair with the manipulative Vicki. When Carl Buckley is fired for insubordination, he urges Vicki to plead with influential businessman John Owens for his job. After suspecting Vicki of using sexual favors to sway Owens, Carl murders him in a fit of jealousy aboard a train.
