Widower and hamburger restaurateur Harvey Howard decides to go to college at the age of 51. Refusing any special privileges, he insists on being treated like any other student and chooses to live in the dormitory, despite objections from his adult children. Over the years, Harvey immerses himself in the full college experience—including study sessions, fraternity initiations, and sporting events. He develops feelings for Professor Helene Gauthier, his French teacher, though he hesitates to pursue remarriage.
