During World War II in Hawaii, U.S. Navy pilot Alec Brooke (Van Johnson) commands a flying boat named the "High Barbaree." During a bombing mission against a Japanese submarine, his PBY Catalina is shot down, leaving him and one other survivor adrift far from Allied territory. As the crippled aircraft floats in open water, the survivors listen to the broadcast of "Tokyo Rose" (Audrey Totter), which triggers Alec’s memories of his past. Alec reminisces with fellow survivor Lt. Joe Moore (Cameron Mitchell) about his childhood sweetheart Nancy Fraser (June Allyson), now a Navy nurse, and his uncle, Capt. Thad Vail (Thomas Mitchell), who once discovered the mythical island of High Barbaree. The two survivors convert the flying boat into a makeshift sailboat, heading toward the fabled island. As supplies dwindle, Alec shares stories of his childhood, his dream to become a doctor, and the tragedies and decisions that led him to become a pilot. These include natural disasters, his rise in an aviation company, and the onset of war that interrupted his medical career. The story culminates as Alec, after losing Joe and falling into a coma, is rescued by his uncle, who guides rescuers to the charted location. Alec is finally reunited with Nancy as he recovers on board. Cast: - Van Johnson as Alec Brooke - June Allyson as Nancy Frazier - Thomas Mitchell as Capt.
