While on leave in Italy, Lt. Tommy Knowlton falls for Jean Standish, who is married and also the daughter of his submarine's commander. Tension between Knowlton and his commanding officer, Commander Toler, intensifies at sea. When Toler is forced to abandon Tommy's best friend on the surface to evade enemy planes, Tommy's anger boils over.
