Joe (Glenn Ford), a clerk in New York City, heads west to claim land he purchased in Arizona. With all his savings spent on the land, Joe is forced to hitchhike his way across the country. Along the journey, he meets Tony (Richard Conte), a drifter, and Anita (Jean Rogers), a Spanish refugee. The trio soon encounters the Professor (Raymond Walburn), an erudite hobo, and together, the four traverse the country. As they travel, they face various challenges, evade the police, and connect with others struggling during the Great Depression.
