Set in the Mojave Desert, 'Heat Lightning' follows Olga, who runs a gas station, lunch counter, and auto camp with her younger sister Myra. Over the course of 24 intense hours, Olga confronts challenges including Myra's eagerness to attend a local dance with a questionable companion, the unexpected arrival of George—an old boyfriend with a shady past—and the overnight stay of two recently divorced women carrying valuable jewels. Sensing an opportunity, George manipulates Olga in hopes of setting up a jewel robbery, while Myra plots to sneak away with her beau. All of this unfolds under the oppressive desert heat, with lightning crackling on the horizon, threatening to disrupt the fragile peace Olga has built.
