Lambert T. Hunkins, an office clerk who has just received a ten-dollar raise, finds his life complicated when his girlfriend, Violet Coney, and her mother learn he has some money saved. They decide it's time for Lambert and Violet to get married—and support the family. However, Lambert secretly harbors feelings for Iris Mabby, the daughter of Senator Mabby, collecting her pictures from newspapers. Railroaded into an engagement with Violet, Lambert is dragged to an auction to purchase furniture for their future home. Unexpectedly, he buys an unauthorized statue of Iris. Determined, Lambert refuses to sell the statue back to the senator, even as a trio of gangsters try to obtain it with hopes of making a big profit. Chaos and complications quickly follow.
