Hazel Woodus is a beautiful yet innocent country girl who deeply loves all the creatures around her, especially her pet fox cub. Although her father treats her harshly, Hazel finds solace running barefoot through the woods whenever life becomes overwhelming. It is there that she is discovered by the local squire, Jack Reddin, who is captivated by her beauty. Conflict arises when the squire, who leads the local hunt, sets his sights on killing Hazel's beloved fox. The title "Gone to Earth" refers to the huntsman's cry when their target has escaped and is unobtainable.
