While traveling to meet his fiancée, Katherine Grant (Sylvia Sidney), Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) is wrongfully arrested for kidnapping a child based on flimsy circumstantial evidence. The small town, gripped by gossip and escalating suspicion, quickly turns to mob rule. A crowd assembles at the jail demanding justice, and when the steadfast sheriff (Edward Ellis) refuses to hand over Joe, the townspeople set the jail ablaze and throw dynamite inside. Unknown to all but Joe, the blast allows him to escape—though his loyal dog Rainbow, who ran to comfort him, is killed in the chaos. The district attorney (Walter Abel) brings a murder case against the main members of the mob, but their identities are difficult to prove as the townspeople either remain silent or provide alibis. The situation appears hopeless until newsreel footage of the incident reveals twenty-two people involved in the attack. Despite this breakthrough, Katherine is unsettled by a key detail: an anonymous letter containing Joe's partially melted ring features a word misspelled exactly as Joe would write it. Realizing Joe survived and is seeking revenge with help from his brothers by framing the defendants for his own murder, she pleads with him to reveal the truth. As the verdicts are about to be delivered, Joe is overcome by guilt and enters the courtroom to confess, setting things right.
