After a murder, criminal Sammy and his driver Eddie Novoc accidentally run over Marie Willens while fleeing the scene. Detective Matt Hethron suspects Eddie but lacks evidence to arrest him. Rather than pursue charges, Hethron compels Eddie to care for Marie, who has suffered a fatal blood clot from the accident and only has a short time to live. As Eddie becomes Marie's caretaker, he finds himself falling in love with her. Desperate to pay for her medical care, Eddie resorts to blackmailing local gang kingpin Sig Ketch.
