After a whirlwind romance in England, Ruth marries John Wiley and returns with him to his tea plantation in Ceylon. She arrives to find a vast house filled with servants and learns she is the only European woman in the area, as the other tea planters are all bachelors. Ruth is troubled by the ongoing veneration of her husband's late father, who is revered by both Europeans and locals. He built Elephant Walk, the plantation house, named for being erected on the path elephants use to reach water. Dick Carver, the plantation manager, has never subscribed to the myth of the great founder, and he and Ruth connect from the start. With her husband frequently absent for work, Ruth and Dick develop feelings for each other. The arrival of a drought and the ensuing cholera epidemic will determine everyone’s fate.
