In this heartfelt drama, Larry Bishop, a school baseball hero, impresses Louise, a talented girl with dreams of studying music. Both aspire to continue their education in Vienna, Austria—Larry in medicine, Louise in music. However, when Louise becomes pregnant, the couple marries and settles in Larry’s small hometown of Napoleon, Illinois. Larry takes a job at Dingle’s hardware store and they raise their daughter, Cynthia, who suffers from chronic health issues and is quite frail. Fifteen years later, the Bishops face financial difficulties and struggle to hold onto their dreams. Dr. Fred Jannings, the family physician, cautions against Cynthia participating in strenuous activities, but Louise encourages her daughter to join the school musical. After Cynthia’s health falters, tension arises between Larry and Louise. Meanwhile, Cynthia develops feelings for a classmate, Ricky Latham. As financial and emotional pressures mount, Larry loses his temper and his job. Ultimately, the family stands united and hopeful when Larry is asked to return to work, finding new satisfaction in their life together.
