Police investigator Finlay (Robert Young) is called in to investigate the brutal murder of Joseph Samuels (Sam Levene), whose death leads him to suspect that one of a group of recently demobilized soldiers may be the killer. With the help of Sergeant Keeley (Robert Mitchum), who fears his friend Mitch (George Cooper) could be the main suspect, the two investigators delve into the soldiers' accounts of the night through a series of flashbacks. The first to share his version is Montgomery (Robert Ryan), followed by Floyd (Steve Brodie), Mitch, and a potential witness, Ginny (Gloria Grahame). As Finlay and Keeley piece together the events leading up to the murder, they uncover a possible motive that could explain the senseless violence.
