When the remains of a woman's body are found after a fire consumes a barn on the estate of wealthy Barbara Carlin (June Lockhart), it is assumed to be her—especially since the victim was wearing Barbara's diamond necklace. However, after the funeral, Barbara secretly contacts Michael Dunn (Hugh Beaumont), the family lawyer. Though Michael urges her to notify the police immediately, Barbara suspects someone is trying to murder her and decides to investigate first. Through a series of flashbacks, the film reveals possible motives of several suspects. The prime suspect is Barbara's irresponsible, philandering husband Rod (Mark Daniels), whom she is reluctantly divorcing and who may be interested in her wealth. Another suspect is Rusty (Cathy O'Donnell), a resentful young woman who believed she was Barbara's sister until her father's will revealed her true status as an orphan raised—but not adopted—by the family. Barbara offers to share her inheritance, but Rusty accepts only a small allowance. Rusty, secretly in love with Rod, mistakenly believes he returns her feelings. Complications arise when the identity of the woman buried under Barbara's name is revealed to be Helen Lawrence (Sonia Darrin), the manipulative girlfriend of boxer George Mandley. Flashbacks further expose Helen's scheming, including getting George to date Barbara while she herself was involved with Rod and plotting to extort money from Barbara. The suspense escalates when, after the power goes out in Barbara's mansion, she is attacked by an unknown assailant. Rod, Michael, and Jeffers the butler all become involved as the mystery unravels. Ultimately, the police discover the true killer just in time, as Michael reveals incriminating knowledge about the murder.
