Boots Malone is a jockey's agent and a bit of a wheeler-dealer, who has gone from living at the Ritz to residing in a room at the stables after his star jockey was killed in an accident. Nearly three years later, he still hasn't found a suitable replacement. Alongside his cronies at the track, Boots acquires a horse that's a bit of a sleeper. Their hopes to cash in take a positive turn when Boots agrees to train an eager young man – a runaway from a wealthy family – to become a jockey. When gangsters pressure Boots to throw the race for another horse, he faces a major dilemma.
