Andre Laurence accompanies his college roommate, Tenga, back to Tenga's Polynesian island home. Immersing himself in the native way of life, Andre faces many challenges as he adapts to the customs and overcomes the community's suspicions. Eventually, he marries Kalua, Tenga's sister, but their marriage remains childless. Tragedy strikes with the eruption of a volcano, leading the island's holy man, The Kahuna, to declare that only Kalua's sacrifice can appease the angry mountain.
