Set in Kentucky before the Civil War, "Band of Angels" follows the story of Amantha Starr, a privileged young woman whose life is shattered after her father's sudden death. She discovers that her mother was a slave and her father's mistress, and that her father had left behind significant debts. As a result, Amantha—now deemed the daughter of a slave—is sold as property when the plantation is auctioned. Purchased by Hamish Bond, a wealthy Louisiana plantation owner, Amantha initially struggles with her new life but eventually develops feelings for Bond. However, upon learning of his past as a slave-trader, she questions their relationship and attempts to rejoin white society, only to realize her future lies elsewhere.
