Assignment in Brittany 1943 DVD - Jean-Pierre Aumont / Susan Peters

Free French Captain Pierre Matard (Jean-Pierre Aumont) is assigned to locate a concealed U-boat pen in occupied France, owing to his uncanny resemblance to Bertrand Corlay, a suspected Nazi collaborator held by the British. At the Corlay family farm, Madame Henriette Corlay (Margaret Wycherly) soon realizes that Matard is not her son but keeps his secret, as she disapproves of Bertrand's cooperation with the Germans. Matard manages to convincingly impersonate Bertrand to both Anne Pinot (Susan Peters), Bertrand's fiancée, and Elise (Signe Hasso), his mistress. After French Resistance contact Louis Basdevant is revealed as a traitor, Matard coerces him, at gunpoint, to smuggle him into a heavily guarded town. When Matard's true identity is uncovered, he shoots Basdevant and a German officer before escaping into the harbor, where he witnesses a U-boat entering its hidden pen. Matard relays a coded message to Plehec (William Edmunds) for wireless transmission, but Plehec is caught. Matard is soon captured as well. Although several civilians refuse to betray him and are executed, Plehec's young nephew Etienne (Darryl Hickman) identifies Matard. Refusing to divulge the wireless's location to Captain Hans Holz (George Coulouris), Matard is tortured for days. Resistance member Jean Kerenor (Richard Whorf) and the villagers free him, and he's nursed back to health by Anne, who confesses her love for him now knowing his real identity. Etienne, remembering his uncle's instructions to protect the wireless, leads Matard to it; Matard successfully sends the U-boat pen's location to his superiors. A commando raid, led by Colonel Trane (Reginald Owen), is organized. On their way to rendezvous with the British, Matard and Kerenor discover Elise and Holz together. In a fit of fury at Elise's deception, Kerenor kills both her and the captain. The noise draws Madame Corlay, who, upon the arrival of German soldiers, sacrifices herself to shield the others by allowing herself to be captured. Matard and the commandos assault the control room. When trapped, they are saved by Kerenor, who attacks the Germans from behind before being fatally shot. The U-boat pens are destroyed, and the commandos escape by boat, with Matard finding Anne and Etienne aboard. Cast: - Jean-Pierre Aumont as Capt.
