After gangster Eddie Kagel is betrayed and killed by his trusted lieutenant, he finds himself in a special-effects version of Hell ruled by Nick, the Devil. Nick realizes that Eddie is an exact double for a judge he wants to discredit. Eddie agrees to have his soul transferred into the judge's body, hoping for revenge against his killer. However, every attempt by Eddie to do evil as the judge results in unintended good, enhancing the judge's reputation and influence, much to Nick's frustration. Complicating matters further, Eddie falls in love with the judge's fiancée, Barbara. Ultimately, Eddie's plans for revenge fail, and Nick concedes defeat, agreeing not to harm the judge or Barbara. Eddie returns to Hell with Nick, but ensures the safety of those he cares about.
