The Angel sisters—Nancy (Dorothy Lamour), Bobby (Betty Hutton), Josie (Diana Lynn), and Patti (Mimi Chandler)—aren't interested in performing together, much to the frustration of their father, Pop Angel (Raymond Walburn), who dreams of buying a soy bean farm. Facing financial challenges, the sisters accept an offer to sing at a questionable night club, where band leader Happy Marshall (Fred MacMurray) is performing. Bobby quickly turns their ten-dollar payment into $190 at the dice table. Happy, attempting to charm Nancy, is rebuffed and ends up borrowing Bobby's winnings under the guise of offering her a job in his band. The following day, the sisters find out that Happy has abruptly left for New York. Determined, the girls follow him and, after auditioning at a night club, they secure a contract—on the condition that they perform with Happy's band.
