Paul Raden (Albert Dekker), the hopelessly insane son of Maxim Raden—the much-hated owner of the Radentown mills—is confined to a straitjacket in a secret room of the family mansion as his father's body is laid to rest. Twenty-five years earlier, Maxim hurled Paul against a wall while Paul defended his mother, causing a brain injury that left Paul permanently damaged. His final memory before descending into insanity is his mother’s agonized scream. At the graveside are Dr. Ben Saunders (Harry Carey), Paul's twin brother John (also Albert Dekker), and John’s wife Elaine (Frances Farmer). Pompey (Ernest Whitman), the loyal family servant who has cared for Paul and guarded the family's secret for a quarter of a century, watches from afar. That night, Dr. Saunders reveals to John that his twin, presumed dead, is actually alive. Their father, refusing to have Paul committed, bribed the doctor to sign a false death certificate and had another child's body buried in Paul's place. When John and Dr. Saunders return to Radenhouse, they find Pompey strangled and Paul missing. As they search frantically, Paul, now free, meets and falls for Millie Pickens (Susan Hayward), an unemployed mill worker. Paul also wanders into a lively honky-tonk where he is flirted with by Peggy Nolan (Jean Phillips). The next morning, Peggy's body is found near the abandoned mills. The second murder plunges the town into terror and greed after Dr. Saunders manipulates John into offering a $5,000 reward for the killer. Millie, now fearful, buys a revolver and convinces Paul—whose damaged mind no longer remembers the murders—to return to Radenhouse with her, suspecting the murderer may be hiding there.
