Matt Kelly (Robert Ryan) is released from jail and leaves town on his boat, evading unpaid storage fees. Returning to his hometown, he is hired by his old friend Jim Kimmerly (Brian Keith), who leads a cooperative of local salmon fishermen. The group struggles against a gang stealing fish from their traps. Desperate for money, Matt joins the raiders, while Jim, unaware of Matt's betrayal, protects him among the other fishermen. Complicating matters, Matt sets his sights on Jim’s fiancée, Nicki (Jan Sterling). Matt's recklessness eventually results in the loss of Jim's fishing boat during a glacier avalanche. Seeking redemption, Matt makes a self-sacrificing attempt to right his wrongs.
