Leslie James (Margaret Lockwood), a young woman who has run away from finishing school and adopted a stage name, finds herself amidst a lively group of chorus line girls. These women dream of attracting wealthy men and quickly set their sights on a royal bachelor, the Earl of Pangborough, who is just returning home after years abroad. Gloria Lind (Renée Houston) targets the Earl and invites him to a chorus line performance, causing tension with Clytie Devine (Lilli Palmer), who feels cheated out of her own opportunity. This rivalry leads to a heated confrontation between the two women. At the performance, the Earl is introduced to all three women and is later invited to a party with them. That evening, Leslie, Gloria, and Clytie each attempt to win his affection. The entire dance troupe is eventually invited to the Earl's grand estate, where the three women plot their seductions, despite the disapproval of his mother. Clytie and Gloria, with assistance from the troupe's cunning con-man, each try to sway the Earl for their own gain. Ultimately, Leslie James wins the Earl's affection. She confesses the truth about her manipulative actions and emotional involvement. The Earl, moved by Leslie, falls in love, leading to their marriage in a romantically ideal conclusion.
