Ex-policeman Vince Kane, now a bail bond broker with partner Joe Farley, maintains strong connections with both the police force and Detective Nick Ferrone. When Ferrone arrests brokerage clerk Claude Brackett as a suspect in a deadly securities robbery, Kane accompanies him during the search of Brackett's apartment, only to discover that Brackett's wife, Lucy, is his former sweetheart. Lucy insists on her husband's innocence and pleads with Kane to secure his bail, but she only has $4,000 of the required $25,000. A mysterious stranger covers $12,000 of the bail, and against Farley's objections, Kane fronts the remaining amount from the company's funds. Soon after his release, Brackett is murdered. Determined to help Lucy, Kane investigates and uncovers Brackett's ties to nightclub owner Jerry McKay and criminal Roy Collins. Kane suspects McKay was the mastermind behind the robbery and adopts unorthodox tactics, posing as a corrupt insider and demanding a bribe from McKay for his silence. Farley challenges Kane's ethics, but Kane turns on him as well, threatening exposure unless he is paid off.
